Maybe they could pass a tax like they did in Ireland.

Greece’s top supermarket chains and the city of Athens launched Monday a campaign to turn shoppers off plastic bags, some 2.5 billion of which are used nationwide each year.
[…]
Around 40 percent of Greece’s 11 million people live in Athens, where increasing levels of domestic waste are being generated, the memorandum said.
Plastic bags end up in hundreds of unofficial or substandard landfills around the country that are a major headache for Greek authorities, but also pose a threat to river and marine wildlife.
Ninety-eight percent of European sea birds have pieces of plastic in their stomachs, the memorandum said.

After I read about the tax on the plastic bags in Ireland and how it cut use by 94%, I realized that since it worked so well in Ireland, I could see some nanny state NJ Democrat, propose the same thing. So, I did a preemptive strike, I purchased a couple Stop and Shop cloth bags and promptly forgot to bring them to the store about 80% of the time. But I’m determined to use the darn things because I really do care about the environment, I drive a compact car, I recycle everything I can and I use energy saving light bulbs. I’m not quite a crunchy con but I do believe in being good stewards of God’s resources.
So, NJ Democrats, don’t pass that tax, we could be persuaded to do it on our own and I don’t want to be penalized when I forget my cloth bag 🙂
