Have you ever done a Google search that starts with a question like “where is…”, “when will…”, “why am…” or “how do…”?
You can be searching for the answer to something pretty innocent like where is the closest ATM or how do I boil eggs, but if you look at the suggested search terms that pop up in the drop-down box, it seems like people are asking Google some pretty heavy things!
For example…
- “Where is my mind?”
- “When will I be loved?”
- “Why am I single?”
Or even…
- “How do I die?”
These suggested searches are all based on real searches by real people. In fact, the more frequently they are typed in, the more likely they are to pop up as a suggestion.
That means people all over the world, in the privacy of their own living rooms or bedrooms, are asking gut-wrenching questions about their lives, their mental state and even their mortality… to a computer. It’s sad but it’s also a sign of just how isolated and disconnected we’ve become in this age of “social networking.”
We’re so used to going to the internet for everything… to look at friend’s photos, to find a recipe, to take a course, to balance our checkbooks… that we’re starting to think we need to turn to the internet for the tough stuff too. With less actual social interaction going on these days, it’s easy to feel isolated or alone in whatever you’re going through, so the faceless masses of the internet might seem like a place of refuge.
But instead of asking a computer program about the intricacies of life, we should be turning to God. Just like the internet, He is available 24/7. But unlike the internet, He is waiting there with open arms to love and guide you on your path through life. He will speak the truth into your life, amidst all the lies the world is throwing at you. And He will always give you the right answer, even if it’s not always what you want to hear.
So next time you’re struggling with a dilemma in your life, whether large or small, don’t reach for your laptop or your phone. Reach for your Bible. Reach out to God, not Google, and get the real answers that you need.
