We have a white cat named Smudge.  When he was a kitten he was all white with one gray spot on his head.  That smudge has long since vanished, but his name remains.   Smudge is a strange cat but we love him just the same.  He has this thing he does……..he sleeps in the most peculiar places.

One of his favorite places is inside a paper grocery bag.  I think he believes he is hiding.  Boxes are also a good place for him to rest.  Sometimes he tries to squeeze his big body into a tiny box.  He tries so hard and it’s quite funny, but , alas there is always some body part hanging over the edges.

One day I found Smudge in this toilet riser.  He looked so cute in there, like he was at total peace with the world.  He didn’t care that he was sleeping in a toilet seat.  He didn’t care that we were all laughing at him.  He wasn’t concerned that once that seat was in the right place he would be in danger of being flushed away.  His only thoughts were rest and relaxation, peace and contentment.

Smudge had found a secret that most of us never find; a position of total trust.  He trusted that we would not harm him.  He trusted that his life was of value.  He trusted that we were looking out for his best interest.  And we were!  So he was able to rest and sleep in peace where ever he chose, even a toilet seat.

In Proverbs 3:5-6 we are told, “Trust in the Lord with all thine heart and lean not unto thy own understanding.  In all thy ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct thy paths.”  That sounds like good advice. Actually this is one of my favorite scriptures.  Our God is worthy of our trust.  He will not fail us.  He will guide and protect us.

Although I believe this to be true, I still don’t like the idea of sleeping in a toilet seat.  Pslam 4:8 says, “I will both lay me down in peace and sleep: for thou, Lord, only makes me dwell in safety.”
