One of the most beautiful places on our Lake Erie shore line is the Marblehead Lighthouse. Not only is it a lovely spot to picnic and watch the boats come and go, but also quite a tourist attraction. People can actually climb the stairs up into the lighthouse and view the lake from there. You can see for miles, just like Jesus looks out over our lives.
Jesus is our lighthouse. The beam of His love leads the way to our safe landing on the shore. In John 8:12 Jesus said, “…I am the light of the world; he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.”
In Psalm 119:105 it says, “They word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.” So we see that not only is Jesus the light of the world, but His word also is a light unto our path. Just like the Marblehead Lighthouse brings boats safely into the harbor, so Jesus will bring us into His kingdom and His word will show us how to live in a way pleasing to God.
After we have been brought into the family of God, then we too become lights. Ephesians 5:8 tells us that even though there was a time that we were in darkness, now we are children of light. It is an amazing thing to understand that once we were in darkness, but through the light of the gospel we have become light.
In Matthew 5:14-16 we are told that we are the light of the world and to let that light shine for all to see. We are not to hide that light, but are to put it on a candle stick so it’s light will shine even farther.
Jesus is our light and we are the light of the world. We are the only light some people will ever see, unless they are brought into the kingdom of light. Lighthouses are beautiful to look at and fun to explore, but they serve a much greater purpose to those who are lost at sea.
