Lake Erie is one lake that is known for fast developing storms. It may be smooth and clear when you leave port, but in a few hours you might be dealing with 10 foot waves. Isn’t that just like our lives? We are sailing along, having a ball, and suddenly there is a huge wave that hits us by surprise.
Our waves can be many things. A death in the family, an unexpected illness, a marriage crisis, money problems….the list could go on and on. One time when I was out on Lake Erie on a ferry boat, the waves were over 10 feet, the ferry was rocking from side to side and almost everyone on the boat was sea sick. That was not fun!!!! Our personal waves can get also get bad enough to make us physically sick.
There are other times when the lake is as smooth as glass. It is quiet and serene. This is when there are no waves to be seen and life is good. We all have these quiet times in our life as well. Maybe not as often as we’d like, but we still ocassionally enjoy a peaceful moment.
Just as we cannot control the waves of Lake Erie, we cannot control the waves of our life. God alone controlls these things. We can make it better or worse by the choices we make, but the waves will still come. When we have Jesus to help us ride the waves, we can make it through without capsizing.
I’m not a surfer and you can’t surf on our lake, but wouldn’t it be fun to ride on top of our waves instead of letting them beat us up and grind our faces in the sand? With God’s help we all can weather the storms of life and come through victorious.
