Halloween is a time when ghosts and goblins roam freely across our nation.  Most people have little or no knowledge of how it started or what they are celebrating.  We know it is called Satan’s holiday.   It has always been about the dark side of things.  With all the scary costumes, horror movies, haunted houses, and jack-o-lanterns.

When I was young Halloween was much different.  We could go trick or treating for 3 evenings in a row.  It was always dark outside and we didn’t need a parent to look after us.  We didn’t go to the store  for  our costumes we made are own.  My mom made a black  cat costume, complete with a tail.  We always fought over that one.  Other favorites were; a bum, a princess, and a circus clown.

We grabbed a flashlight and off we went.  We would head in different direction each night, so we could get the most candy possible.  We didn’t worry about apples with razor blades inside, or candy that had been tampered with.  We never thought about someone kidnapping us.  The worst prank my friends  and  I did was soap the neighbors windows.  Our  horror movies were  Frankenstein and The Birds.  We were encouraged to make happy expressions on our jack-o-lanterns.

Now people spend their hard earned money to get the perfect costume for little Mary.  There is no creativity needed, just buy what you want.  Unfortunately,  you might have 6 Batmans and they all look exactly alike. Where’s the fun it that?  Today the children try to make the most develish expressions on their jack-o-lanterns.  Some play some nasty tricks, even on their friends.

We send our children out in groups, with adult supervision, because of all the real scary people out there.  They assign 1 night for trick or treating and it is during daylight hours.  Most of the horror films are really HORRIBLE; complete with blood and guts, ax murders vampires, and werewolves.  Almost every town has their own haunted house and parents have to check through the children’s treats to make sure they are safe.

Whether or not you, as a Christian, choose to celebrate Halloween is purely a personal conviction.  Many go all out to celebrate the holiday.  Others stay away from it completely, regarding it as a satanic practice.   Still others adjust the activities so the  costumes are not  scary and plan Harvest parties or Trick or Trunk Night.  This way the children can still have their fun and candy, but in a safe way.

Today is Halloween, so celebrate it however you choose and try not to be judgemental of others who have a different way celebrating the holiday.
