To the far right of the jail garden lies their pumpkin patch. They call it The Pediatric Pumpkin Patch because of what they do with it. This is the largest plot of land , except maybe the sweet corn, that is used for only one crop.
The big orange pumpkins fill the field with color as they await their harvest. Most of them will be used for jack-o-lanterns for Halloween. Maybe a few will become yummy pumpkin pies.
When the pumpkins are harvested they are donated to organizations that do research on childhood diseases. The organization sells them as a fund raising event. They are especially committed to a group studying a childhood cancer cluster in Clyde, Ohio. Sheriff Overmyer lives in Clyde and knows some of the affected families personally. Several children have already died from the cancers, but our hope is that a cure will be found before we lose any more children to this disease.
Sheriff Kyle Overmyer has certainly made an impact on Sandusky County with his ingenious idea of having a garden. It is a blessing to so many people in the area, as well as benefiting the jail. We need more individuals in public office to take initiative and be creative about solving problems.
Good job Sheriff Overmyer and may God bless you as you continue to watch over the Sandusky County jail and its wonderful garden.
