Have you ever met anyone who didn’t know that difference between a porterhouse steak and a pork loin? I have, my husband. Well, he does now, but when we first got married 42 years ago he didn’t. The first time we went to the grocery store, I asked him what kind of meat he wanted me to buy. His response was, “I don’t know, just meat.”
Now, my father was a meat cutter by profession, so I knew the different kinds and cuts of meat. Our family ate everything from sweet breads to pigs feet, beef tongue to head cheese and just about everything in between. We even made our own smoked fish, bacon and smoked sausage.
When Rich asked his parents what they were having for supper, the answer was always the same, ” It’s meat, just eat it.” He knew the difference between chicken and hamburger, but that was about all. Consequently, I had a bit of a problem that day at the grocery store.
Should I buy a beef roast or pork chops? Should I buy turkey breast or cornish hens? Should I buy bacon or sausage? I liked almost all of it, except for lamb and sweet breads. I like both beef liver and chicken livers. Rich likes neither. Needless to say we had fun our first few months of marriage while I educated him on the types of meats available.
After 42 years, he pretty well knows what he likes now and I have stretched him beyond chicken and hot dogs. I can even send him to the store and most of the time he buys the right thing, although he still is challenged by the different types of bratwurst.
Actually my husband is a wonderful man and if choosing meat is his only difficulty, I think I’ll keep him another 42 years. I thank God every day for a good, godly man to share my life with.
