I’m at the ServiceNation summit this morning. Just heard a kid who had been shot in both legs in a street fight in Philadelphia describe how he decided to then join City Year so he would “not let these bullet wounds define me.” He then tutored a 9th grader who would defiantly sleep in class, discrupt it and avoid work. Through persistent nudging, he got the kid back on track. The boy didn’t drop out; he’s in 11th grade.
Leon is now in college studying to become a teacher.
