Talk radio host Michael Savage on October 22:
Do you actually believe he’d be going to Hawaii at this time with 10 days to go? You actually believe that? No, no, no — no, no, no, no, no. No. There’s some other reason that he’s leaving the mainland of the United States in the midst of this toe-to-toe struggle right now, and it’s got to do with his birth certificate….
And Obama’s leaving for Hawaii — why? Why? What’s he doing there? Why’s he going there, huh? What’s he going there for, huh? Why’s he gonna — the last phase of a race, he’s getting off the track just to visit his grandmother? Don’t be stupid. It’s the birth certificate issue, you fools, you.”
Media Matters documents the other conservative commentators who charged that Obama’s visit to Madelyn Dunham was fishy. “See I think this is about something else,” Rush Limbaugh said.
Dunham died today.
I’m not trying to use her death as a told-ya-so, but this moment brings in stark relief just how out control this campaign became. Partisans on both sides–but more so among Republicans–came to think of the opponent as a subhuman demon, capable of the most grotesque depravity, including faking a loved one’s illness in order to cover up some crime.
How sad that she didn’t make until tomorrow night. You can offer a prayer for the Obama family here. While we’re at it, let’s also pray that, whatever the results of the election, we can figure out a way to practice politics without turning those we disagree with into monsters.
