Grammy Award-winning country singer Tim McGraw admitted that his emotions got the best of him when moving his oldest daughter Gracie across the country, leading to a breakdown.

He shared on Audacy’s “Rob + Holly Show,” “I drove my daughter to L.A. when she moved out there and drove cross-country with her. I took all the seats out of my Cadillac Escalade and loaded it up with all her stuff.”

McGraw continued, “When I dropped her off, I mean, I just lost it. And then I had to drive home all by myself. I was crying the whole time.” He and his wife, fellow country musician Faith Hill, share three daughters: Gracie, Maggie, and Audrey. McGraw also admitted that having them out of the house was an adjustment for him and his wife.

He said, “It was tough at first, you know. I mean, it’s always harder on Mom than it is on Dad, I think. But there were a lot of tears.” Regardless of the change, McGraw shared that his road trip experience led to a new song on his upcoming album. He said, “In fact, there’s a song on my new album coming up that guitar player Bobby Miner wrote because I called him when I was driving back from dropping Gracie off and was just sort of having a heart-to-heart about dropping my daughter off.”

They’ve maintained a relatively private family life during their marriage, but both Hill and McGraw have shared the joys of parenthood on their social media accounts. Earlier this year, Hill shared a video of McGraw dancing in the back seat to the song “good 4 you” by Olivia Rodrigo.

Hill’s caption said, “This is a rare, very rare look into a side of my husband that only his girls and I get to see.” McGraw and Hill first crossed paths in Nashville at a Country Radio Seminar showcase for new talent. At the time, the “Highway Don’t Care” crooner was in a relationship with Kristine Donahue, and Hill was engaged to Scott Hendricks.

The couple would eventually tour together in 1996 on McGraw’s Spontaneous Combustion tour. While on stage, McGraw proposed to Hill that same year, and the couple married that October. Their first daughter, Gracie, was born in May of 1997, and their second daughter, Maggie, was born in 1998.

Although touring brought them together in the first place, McGraw and Hill had never actually gone on an official tour since Hill was technically his opening act during the Spontaneous Combustion tour. Their first joint tour, Soul2Soul, kicked off in July 2000. Their third daughter, Audrey, was born in December 2001.

Every parent can likely relate to Tim McGraw’s story of moving his daughter cross country. In your mind, your child will always be your baby, but you look up one day, and they’re an adult. You start to wonder how time went by so fast. Still, Gracie will always need her father, and there’s no doubt that McGraw will come running whenever she calls.
