Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence has been in the spotlight since high school due to his football skills, but he says his relationship with his wife, which started in fifth grade, keeps him grounded. Lawrence said, “My relationship with my wife has been huge. Especially, like I said of the ups and downs I’ve already had in my first two years in the NFL.”
He continued, “I think that having that person that I’ve known since we met in fifth grade, so she’s known me since before everything. Just having someone that’s been there throughout every step of the way, that’s something that’s really special to me.” Lawrence and his wife Marissa were married in 2021. He was drafted by the Jaguars later that year.
He added, “I’m fortunate that I found that person, especially that young, before everything, you know, got crazy. It would be tough trying to find that person now. One, just on a trust level, but also personality, fit, like this life, is different than a lot of people’s lives. She’s amazing. She’s showing me, like you said, in the good and in the bad, it doesn’t matter if I’m playing great or not playing great. It makes the lows easier and the highs even sweeter when you have the right person because that’s what life’s about.”
Like her husband, Marissa hails from Cartersville, Georgia. The pair attended Cartersville High School, where she regularly posted pictures from Trevor’s football games. Marissa went to Anderson University, where she played soccer. In July 2020, Marissa shared photos from her and Trevor’s extravagant engagement. In the middle of Clemson Memorial Stadium, Trevor wore a suit and knelt down to ask Marissa if she would marry him. Marissa wore a white dress and strappy black heels, covering her mouth with her hand in shock as he proposed.
She wrote on Instagram, “Easiest YES of my life!!! I love you always, Trevor.” The couple tied the knot on April 10, 2021, in front of family and friends. Marissa shared a series of photos from the wedding the following day, writing, “My love forever.” As the quarterback continues to succeed, he knows that his talents come from God.
Lawrence told Sports Illustrated, “I don’t think anyone has abilities for no reason. I don’t think anything is a coincidence. God gave me these things for a reason, not just talent on the field, but other opportunities to be a light to people.”
Given all the celebrities who sing their own praises and do everything they can to increase their fame, it is encouraging to see someone who loves God and is proud to have a person by their side to keep them humble. Lawrence’s story also reminds us that God created us to work best in the community. We cannot be at our best unless we have people who challenge us and help us stay humble and rooted in truth.
