(I wrote this last Friday but forgot to publish it. Oops!)
Christianity Today’s cover article on adoption, “Abba Changes Everything” is a powerful personal testimony of adoption that links the experience of adopting a child to the theological significance of God’s adoption of us as sons and daughters.
I’d also like to recommend, in a general sense, the journal Books and Culture. It’s a great publication that covers a wide array of topics (the current issue looks at ethics, politics, history, culture, and theology). To choose one among the many great articles this time around, I’m going to recommend “Undercover Among the Evangelicals,” Susan Wise Bauer’s review of Gina Welch’s book, In the Land of Believers, in which Welch recounts her experience pretending to be an evangelical Christian.
Okay, one more from Books and Culture. I also enjoyed Karl Johnson’s review of Judith Shulevitz’ The Sabbath World, “How Shall We Then Rest?” (although for this one, you’ll only get a preview unless you subscribe, which, again, I recommend).
I was also interested in the TIME magazine cover article this week: “The Only Child: Debunking the Myths.” It made me think about population control, motivations for family size, the significance of siblings, and how our culture thinks about what it means to be a successful child.
Happy reading!
