The book is a memoir about the author, Kent Annan’s, year in Haiti trying to live among the indigenous people. Though it was written before the earthquake, it is a helpful story in trying to understand the complex systems of poverty and degradation alongside having hope for the real and faithful people caught in the web of hardship. 

As an aside, I’d also like to commend Books and Culture to anyone who is interested in a thoughtful Christian perspective on contemporary books, both fiction and non-fiction.
