I agree with the Slate panel’s assessment of the particular darkness of this episode. But I’ll take it to a level beyond mere “recidivism” to full blown redemption.

Is it possible? Can we actually escape our past and our circumstances in order to change? That was the question, and the answer was, of course “no” – No from Carmella, no from Tony B (broke my heart! but maybe there’s still hope for our erstwhile ex-con massage therapist. Probably not.)….no (probably) from A.J….

Depressing. But perhaps, without God…true?
