From my dad:
Amy, this past weekend, I had to operate on your brother, Fred Fern Welborn. His vascular system (roots) was seriously compromised. My intention was to surgically free the arteries and veins and to do a major transplant. There was too much that I could not save, but there was a bit that survived surgery. He was in intensive care over the weekend. Then today I found a very good Boston fern match and did a transplant this afternoon. So far, so good. What remains of Fred’s system seems to be melding with the fresh material. For a 35 year old, Fred is doing quite well. Prospects for recovery are good, so do not despair.
Yes, my most vivid memory of our move from Kansas to Tennessee back in 1973 was everyone’s concern over the fern, which made the ride in the trunk. Would it make it? Yes, it did..and as you can see..is still with us today, thanks to much continuing attention..
