…at which representatives of the Catholic Church won’t be able to send a steak back to the kitchen without having to answer for abuse.

Now, this priest’s question regarding a shopping center development near his parish is certainly high hyperbole, but the response….

Zuerlein questioned how the project would affect children and families and expressed concern over increased traffic that the shopping center could bring to Cornhusker and Centennial Roads.

“Can you assure me that I will not be presiding over a funeral for a child who was killed by a car because of the increase in traffic through our neighborhood as a result of the new development?” he wrote.

Zuerlein, who has been living in Papillion since Feb. 14, wrote that he had concerns “about any project that claims to lay golden eggs” and urged the mayor to hold the developer accountable to his promises.

The letter was read into the record during Tuesday night’s public hearing on the project.

Councilman Gene Jaworski took issue with the letter during the hearing.

“I take offense to that, because he’s asking if we can guarantee there’s not going to be a funeral for a child, but can he guarantee me I’m not going to read any more negative stuff about the Catholic churches and the Catholic priests and the lawsuits?” Jaworski said.
