Brendan Cull, a spokesman for the Kerry campaign in Ohio, recently countered that Mr. Kerry is a man of deep faith, and that he doesn’t tell the church how to do its business, and its leadership shouldn’t tell him what to do.
But now there is evidence Catholics aren’t willing to adopt the Kerry campaign’s live-and-let-live approach to the issue.
A Zogby Interactive poll shows that, among Ohio Catholics, Mr. Kerry trails President Bush by a 57 percent to 40 percent margin. The poll was conducted as the communion controversy reached full flower, and while it has begun to fade from news pages, the Kerry campaign must wonder: Will Catholics remember this issue in November?
Mr. Kerry’s overall approval rating among Ohio Catholics is at just 41 percent. More alarming: One in every two Catholics here say that, considering Mr. Kerry, they have a “very unfavorable” opinion of him – the strongest negative sentiment measured by the poll.
