Meeting evacuees at the George R. Brown Convention Center today are volunteers lined up with strollers. They give them to those needing them. Some of them pass out toys as well.
In the registration area, evacuees hand over their clothes, which are tagged, and they receive new clothes. The old ones go to the Hilton Hotel across the street for laundering.
Then they can pick out a place to sleep, pick out new clothes, diapers, toys and other items in a section of the convention center set up to look like a thrift store. Dwight said there was even a box of clocks in there.
The items are sorted outside where people are pulling up in droves in trucks and cars and dropping off donations.
