Someone has done an interesting thing – compared some pages from two different editions of a Richard Scarry book, editions 30 years apart. Some of the changes are reasonable – I have no problem bringing more gender balance into the portrayal of professions (although one wearies, in children’s books, that the police officer is always female. It’s just as predictable as the old days) – that’s reality, after all. But other notes are more striking – the simplification of language being most notable. On that, we could write a book. Someone probably has, already though.
