I will post more on the Pope’s last day and a half in Poland, once more news stories and texts are put on the web. But for the moment, I’ll say this:

It was a most astonishing moment. As Benedict was slowly, meditatively walking past memorial stones at Birkenau, you could see in the background, people removing their rain headgear – their hats and scarves – and the sun reflecting where shadows had, up to that point dwelt. Then the cameras drew back, and we saw – this rainbow.
