He did not disclose Wednesday that doctors had also found cancer in his right ureter, the duct that carries urine from the kidney to the bladder. Doctors knew of the cancer in the ureter before the surgery, they said.

The ureter is so thin, the chance of the cancer spreading from it were greater than a spread from the bladder. That’s why doctors removed both the bladder and the lower 1/6th of the ureter, doctors said.

Tests will be performed on all of the tissue removed to determine exactly what stage the cancer is in, doctors said.

There’s a chance the cardinal could be released from the hospital before those tests come back.
