I saw this headline in the AZ Republic, and I thought…this is newsworthy…why?
35 people confirmed as Roman Catholics in Latin rite
But then I saw…ah…the story is about celebration of the sacrament (for 35 people, ages 9-17) at the Mater Misericordiae Traditional Mission in Phoenix (Bishop Olmstead’s see) .
A mission in which, incindentally, all the sacraments are celebrated according to the 1962 Missal. No to be confused with another kerfuffle from the Southwest from about 6 weeks ago in which it was reported that the Traditional mission in Santa Fe was forbidden by Archbishop Sheehan from celebrating weddings.
In other similar news, a correspondent writes from Detroit:
Wanted to let you know that Cardinal Maida of the Archdiocese of Detroit has granted the Tridentine Community at St. Josaphat permission to hold masses according to the missal of 1962 on Holy Days, our pastor Fr. Mark Borkowski told us during Sunday’s sermon that he has this in writing.
By the way, I heard Bishop Olmstead preach a few days ago – at the very early morning Pro-Life Mass at the conference. Hey, I heard most of it. Enough to give an opinion. It was quite good – a reflection of the meaning of the resurrected body and the implications for that for our understanding and valuation of the human person, from conception to natural death.
I heard a couple of other prelates preach over the past few days, as well. Bishop Olmstead had the most to say. And the rest is silence. For now, at least.
