As was the case in the spring, rumors about "something" having to do with permission for the Tridentine Mass have started to heat up of late, mostly on various Catholic blogs, both in the US and in Europe. The rumors this time have a bit more substance in that various priests who are supposedly in the know and have been in attendance at various gatherings or have been interviewed have been specifically quoted as saying that "something" has been signed. The question of what this "something" is is not known. It’s assumed that the "something" will be issued in conjunction with Benedict’s Post-Synodal Apostolic Exhortation summing up last fall’s Synod on the Eucharist.

The reason I mention this is because the rumors have made the leap to the newspaper – the London Times, in a story by Ruth Gledhill – yes, the same Times and Gledhill who gave us the "Pope is going save unbaptized babies from Limbo so people won’t be mad at him anymore" headline and story from last week. The headline on this story is not as bad, but also strange:

Pope set to bring back Latin Mass that divided the Church

Well, I’m not so sure about that, myself. And the implications, especially when combined with the previous story – well, can we get this straight? Is Benedict a panderer or a divider? Which is it, people?

Anyway, the article is rather interesting because its source is…a blog. (cited in the piece).  That’s essentially it. One priest is interviewed who says, "Well, considering what Benedict’s written on the liturgy…could be."

You know…you’d think a reporter might, in this case, interview the source named in the blog in writing the story..
