Alice Lok Cahana survived the Holocaust to become an artist of international renown.
The most recent acknowledgment of her work was given by Pope Benedict XVI last month in St. Peter’s Basilica. The pontiff met with the Houston-based artist when her painting No Names was presented to him for the Vatican Museum’s collection.
Museum director Francesco Buranelli, who chose the 85-by-46 inch abstract painting, said it "will complete the important cycle of 20th-century art history in (the museum)." That collection includes important works by luminaries such as Georges Rouault, Giacomo Manzu, Giorgio de Chirico and Henri Matisse.
"You don’t even dare to dream this could happen to you," said Cahana.
