John Allen interviews Archbishop O’Brien. Well worth a read.

The June 6 letter, O’Brien told NCR, represents a last-ditch effort to repair relations. O’Brien said he actually reached a decision two to three months ago to ask the Legionaries and Regnum Christi to leave the archdiocese, but was persuaded to stay his hand by three Vatican cardinals who asked him to meet first with Corcuera.
That meeting, O’Brien said, took place earlier in June.

In the NCR interview, O’Brien also expressed skepticism that the Legionaries will be able to implement needed reforms until they come to terms with seemingly persuasive evidence that Maciel, the founder, engaged in activity that was “less than honorable, and maybe even sinful.”

It’s a pretty amazing interview, and you really should read the whole thing.
What struck me was Archbishop O’Brien’s transparency (the word of the moment) about this matter, and his clarity in laying out exactly what is happening, what his concerns are, and so on. It is, when you think about it, admirable not only in its truth, but in its charity to be this clear. There is no mystery, no one on any side of this has a chance to obfuscate, the expectations are right there, and there is a determination to act and see this thing through.
It’s a model. Would that more bishops apply it to conflicts within their dioceses, to those using questionable tactics, exploiting their positions or institutions to subvert Church teaching… or..well…see the post below this one.
