– Accepted the resignation from the office of auxiliary of the diocese of Rockville Centre, U.S.A., presented by Emil A. Wcela, upon having reached the age limit.

– Appointed Msgr. Peter A. Libasci of the clergy of the diocese of Rockville Centre, U.S.A., pastor of the parish of St. Therese of Lisieux, as auxiliary of the same diocese (area 3,164, population 3,354,000, Catholics 1,444,000, priests 476, permanent deacons 267, religious 1,397). The bishop-elect was born in Jackson Heights, U.S.A. in 1951 and ordained a priest in 1978.

This is a strange source, but a quick search turned up a bio of Fr. Libasci at the page for a Long Island – area talk show. Being a graduate of St. Meinrad, he appreciates Benedictines, things monastic and medieval:

St. Meinrad Archabbey is located in Southern Indiana, just about fifty miles west of Louisville, Kentucky. In 1852 the Benedictine monks of Einsiedeln, Switzerland (established in the Ninth Century and still very active to the present day), came to the United States and established a monastery in what is presently the town of St. Meinrad, Indiana. The monks established a high school, a college and a seminary for the formation of priests.
I continue to visit both St. Meinrad, Indiana and the Abbey of Einsiedeln, Switzerland whenever opportunity arises.

While serving at my former assignment – Our Lady of Good Counsel in Inwood, NY, I returned to St. John’s University to earn the Master of Arts in Catechetical Theology. Many issues of the Twenty-first Century require on-going study and awareness. From a philosophical or theological point of view, one must not find one’s self unaware of current critical analysis.

I have been interested in the art and music of the Middle Ages and enjoy visits to the Metropolitan Museum’s Cloisters in Upper New York City. I was a frequent subscriber to the offerings of the Waverly Consort when they performed at the Cloisters and Alice Tully Hall and also, at Christmas time, when they would perform in full Medieval costume, playing authentic instruments, at the church of St. Mary the Virgin in New York City.
