Dear Amy:  I was hoping that you might be able to help us spread the word that students who were enrolled at the private colleges affected by the hurricane are welcome here at BC (we will be waiving tuition for the fall semester for them, and will work with them on housing and meals).  I know that the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities is helping facilitate the transfer of students enrolled in the Jesuit schools to other institutions, and so we expect that most students from Loyola New Orleans will be taken care of through that program; however, we want to make sure that all affected students and their families are aware of this opportunity.  Since we are a Catholic college, we thought that your readers might be a group most likely to know someone who would be interested, although we welcome students of all faiths to join us.

Our intent is to offer these displaced students a home for this semester, and to facilitate their return to their home institutions when they are ready to accept them back—we’re not trying to “poach” students from the affected colleges.  The blurb below (which we sent to our alumni) provides contact information, but I would also be happy to answer any questions that folks have (I’m the Dean of the College).  My number is 913-360-7413.

Thanks for your help!  –Kim Shankman, Benedictine College
