Hong Kong’s cardinal-designate Joseph Zen suggested Thursday the Vatican might be willing to compromise on the biggest obstacle to its tense relations with Beijing — the question of who should appoint bishops in China.

A day before he was due to be elevated as cardinal in Rome, the 74-year-old bishop said China and the Holy See had begun talks on rebuilding relations strained over 55 years and was optimistic fences could be mended.

"I agree that the situation on the mainland is different and perhaps the Pope might make some compromises… but no way should they allow (China) to have a say on everything," he told Hong Kong-based Cable TV news.

"For example, the Vatican would let (China) choose one of three names. That would be possible and it’s been done like that before," he added
