In the Classical Catholic Mass, the entire service is conducted in Latin, and the priest seldom leaves the altar and only occasionally turns to face the congregation. Direct participation by saying responses to the priest was rare, and only after 1947 (I need to check this date when the Dialogue Mass was approved).

In the Modern Catholic Mass, the entire service is usually conducted in the language of the congregation, even though church law still encourages the use of Latin. The priest moves about from altar to a seat away from the altar to the lectern, even if there is to be no sermon. The assembly is expected to respond to the priest’s prayers, and as well to sing acclamations that, in the Classical Mass, were reserved to the choir.
