A SF Chronicle op-ed on the possibilities of parental notification in that state

Here’s where the abortion rights groups lose me and, I believe, mainstream America. As a parent, I have to sign a permission slip to let my young daughter go to tour the Dreyer’s Ice Cream factory. I had to sign a permission slip when she had teeth pulled. I have the right to infringe on her privacy when I restrict what she watches on television or reads in a newspaper. But if she were to get pregnant as a teenager, I would not even have the right as a parent to be informed of a major medical procedure to terminate that pregnancy.

If this initiative qualifies for the November ballot, we will see one of the most emotional and heated campaigns the state has ever experienced. People thought Proposition 209, the 1996 campaign for the initiative against racial preferences in government programs, was emotional, but I believe the Parental Notification Initiative campaign will make the 209 brouhaha look incredibly civil.
