HOW CIVILIZATIONS DIE
(And Why Islam is Dying Too)
By David P. Goldman

Chapter 10, Pages 137-155
You’ve heart about the Death of the West. But the Muslim world is on the brink of an even greater collapse.
Will we go down in the implosion?
ISLAM:
THE ARABS AS CHOSEN PEOPLE
154
According to Franz Rosenzweig, jihad is the supreme Muslim act of sanctification precisely because war is the most sacred act of pagan society in general:
The concept of the Path of Allah is entirely different than God’s path. The paths of God are the disposition of divine decrees high above human events. But following the path of Allah means in the narrowest sense propagating Islam through holy war. In the obedient journey upon this path, taking upon one’s self the associated dangers, the observance of the laws prescribed for it, Muslim piety finds its way in the world. The path of Allah is not elevated above the path of humankind, as far as the heaven stretches above earth, but rather the path of Allah means immediately the path of his believers. 15
Islam, in sum, is a religion in which personal self-sacrifice is rewarded by success, just as a soldier is rewarded for bravery in battle by a king. Death in jihad is the exemplary form of self-sacrifice which Islam offers its adherents, in place of the Judeo-Christian concept of vicarious sacrifice which gives life rather than takes it. And in the absence of success — in the face of spectacular economic and military failure over the past two generations of the Muslim encounter with modernity — Islam faces a crisis of faith from which it cannot recover, a crisis expressed most vividly in the closing of the Muslim womb.
And, as we shall see, population collapse in the West is not unrelated to pagan religion, either — including even the pagan principle of self-sacrifice in holy war (as opposed to vicarious sacrifice in light of God’s love). By the turn of the twentieth century, the Europeans subordinated Christianity to their own inclination towards self-adoration, and a neo-pagan strain of nationalism overwhelmed the universal impulse in Christian churches. At the time of World War I, the words “holy war” were pronounced more often by Europeans than by Arabs. The catechism distributed to German military

chaplains spoke of a “great, holy war” against “evil.” 16 When the German army conquered Brussels in August 1914, the newspaper Der Tiigliche Rundschau enthused, “The great times of heroes, which had almost become a legend, have returned. So, too, did our sons and brothers march off into the holy war.” 17 And in England, in 1915, the Bishop of London indulged in this dumbfounding conflation of the sacrifice of Christ on the cross with British war aims: “The Church can best help the nation first of all by making it realize that it is engaged in a Holy War. Christ died on Good Friday for Freedom, Honour, and Chivalry, and our boys are dying for the same thing…. MOBILIZE THE NATION FOR HOLY WAR.” 18
European civilization — and European demographics — have never really recovered from the 1914-1918 war. But how and why did what used to be Christendom succumb to pagan religious impulses, and eventually to the demographic decline that has been the fate of pagan societies since ancient Sparta? The failure of Christianity in Europe is a story that begins in the Dark Ages but does not reach its terrible denouement until the seventeenth century.
The next page begins Chapter 11, but this is the last page that I’m posting on Watchwoman on the Wall.
It’s time to secure your own copy of this book for yourself.

BECAUSE THE NEXT TOPIC DISCUSSED IN CHAPTER 11 GOES INTO
HOW CHRISTIANITY DIED IN EUROPE.
And how it died in Europe is what we need to stop here in America before it’s too late!
(Just the first sentence of Chapter 11, to whet your appetite for more!)
In The Rise of Christianity, Rodney Stark observes that Christian prohibition of abortion and infanticide contributed to the success of the new religion.”
