Watchwoman:For those of you old enough to actually remember music that was sung by people with voices who sang poems of love or love lost, songs like “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” and “Harbor Lights.”  “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” was featured on a TV program, “Criminal Minds,” recently.  They played the old, romantic ballad sung by a negro group called THE PLATTERS (negro used to be the polite way of referring to blacks in the 1950’s).

“Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” is a show tune written by American composer Jerome Kern and lyricist Otto Harbach for their 1933 musical Roberta. It was originally recorded by Gertrude Niesen, on October 13, 1933, on the Victor label 24454. Possibly the most famous version was recorded in 1958 by the doo wop group The Platters, which became a number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 — it reached number three on the R&B charts in 1959[1] — (Wikipedia*)

“Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” came from an era long before “N” music consisted of nothing more than hate-filled, non-lyrical-noisy-rap-crap praising guns to murder and black females are nothing but ho’s to be exploited, used and abused, by black males while the “N” word is repeated over and over ad nauseum, but it’s okay because the drug-filled rappers pronounce it, “nig’ra”. (But if you’re white, don’t say anything but the “N” word and hang your head slightly when saying it.)

Alas, here are the stirring and haunting words of “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.” I’ve also included the YouTube video for your pleasure, although “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” is usually thought of as a romantic love song, it does not have a happy last verse.  Nevertheless, we all dreamed of nothing but love as we slow-danced to the mellow rhythm wrapped in our boyfriends arms in the school gyms of America decorated with crepe paper streamers and Kleenex carnations.  I guess hearing about the death of Dick Clark, one can get a little sentimental.  So come back in time with me to when lyrics were actually lyrical.  Enjoy, the Platters and “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.”  Turn down the lights, go ask your husband or wife to join you on the kitchen tile floor and slow dance with me, okay.  ▬  Donna Calvin

SMOKE GETS IN YOUR EYES

_______________________________________________

They asked me how I knew
My true love was true
Oh, I of course replied
Something here inside cannot be denied

They said someday you’ll find
All who love are blind
Oh, when your heart’s on fire
You must realize
Smoke gets in your eyes

So I chaffed them and I gaily laughed
To think they could doubt my love
Yet today my love has flown away
I am without my love

Now laughing friends deride
Tears I can not hide
Oh, so I smile and say
When a lovely flame dies
Smoke gets in your eyes
Smoke gets in your eyes
