So I thought I’d follow Oprah’s lead and share with you some of my favorite things as impetus for you to come up with your own. I think we love Oprah’s list because we know we can trust her; she’s not in anybody’s pocket and doesn’t endorse anything unless it is a genuine fave. That integrity is praiseworthy. Let’s come up with our favorite things, too, not because we think they’re supposed be our favorite (everybody else likes it, it was a gift, my dad works for the company…) but because these things give our souls that sense of lift-off.
Here’s what’s making my favorites list this is final day of July, 2009 — not in order, simply as they come to mind. Please leave a comment with your favorite things. If you need a boost getting started, there’s always “raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens….”
Favorite Things in Victoria’s Charmed Life
1. My Philip Stein Teslar watch. This has actually shown up in the past as one of Oprah’s
Favorite Things, too. It’s a watch implanted with a Teslar chip to protect against ElectroMagneticField radiation. NASA astronauts and US Olympic team members all get one. You’re supposed to wear the watch 24/7 and some benefits include sounder sleep and improved energy. Some of the bands are made of lizard and snake and things I wouldn’t buy, but there’s also a plain black, rubber band that works fine, and a satin-covered rubber band that’s nice for evening and dressing up.
2. Voss Water from Norway. It’s lovely water, but what I really like are the glass bottles. I know we’re throwing away far too much plastic, but I don’t like drinking out of metal so I use (and reuse) the Voss glass bottles. I’ve collected half a dozen of the small (12.6-ounce) bottles and couple of the big ones, and I refill them from the water purifier built into my fridge. There’s always one in my purse and one in my gym bag, and the others are in the dishwasher waiting till there’s a load to do. I know this company is in the business of selling water, not bottles, and when I do find myself out and water-less, this is what I buy. But most of the time, it’s earth before commerce. At this point in time, I don’t see how we can look at things otherwise.
3. Nike Dri-Fit Women’s Elite Fitness Gloves. I wear these to lift weights with the big guys. They not only protect my hands and give me a better grip, they’re totally machine-washable. The palm is a patented synthetic leather, so the whole glove is vegan. I also wear them whenever drive to protect my hands from the sun.
4. Lara Bars. These uncooked fruit-and-nut bars are whole, healthful, reasonably priced, and
easy to toss into the bag should the need for sustenance arise. They’ve been a real boon to my high-raw diet — something to nibble at the cafe when my friend is having a cinnamon roll, a tide-me-over when the plane (and dinner) are delayed, even an in-a-pinch breakfast when I haven’t been to the market and there’s no fresh fruit or juice fixins.
5. Ahava Mud Exfoliator. From Dead Sea Laboratories, this effective yet super-gentle exfoliator is the only one my sensitive skin can tolerate. It’s also enriched some something called “Mineral Skin Osmoter” — I don’t know what that is, but my skin really likes it. It’s cruelty-free, of course.
Now you’ve gotten my Five Friday Faves. Please comment with yours. And if you like this concept, I can add it as a regular feature.
