It is easy to get frustrated with your 9 to 5 job. We all do. We may feel unappreciated. Or underpaid. We may see people get promoted who aren’t as qualified as we are. The professional world is not always a fair place.

But our frustration is for naught. It doesn’t matter whether your employer appreciates you, promotes you or pays you what you deserve. Ultimately, your true employer is God. And His is the only appreciation that you need.

That is why when you go to work, you have to remember that you are serving God. I never wake up in the morning with the idea that I am working for my employer. I work for God. When I do my job, I do it knowing that God is my employer, and that He is watching. I want Him to be pleased with my work product. I want Him to observe me interacting with others in a kind and respectful manner. And I want Him to be happy with how I conduct myself in the public sphere.

I know that while my employer may or may not look out for my best interests, God will. It is amazing how many career doors God has opened in my life. So many opportunities have come my way due to His intervention. I’ve been offered jobs that I never even applied for. I have been offered jobs for which I didn’t have the right qualifications. That wasn’t luck. That was God.

When God is your employer, going to work becomes much easier. When we work for people, we can be easily offended if we aren’t rewarded for a job well done. We can become upset every time we look at a paycheck that doesn’t reflect our skills.

But when God is your employer, the people you work for are just that – people. They are fallible human beings with issues and limitations. Their opinion of you is neither here nor there. The one you are trying to impress is God.

I work with an individual who clearly knows that God is his employer. He always goes above and beyond the call of duty. He has a great attitude. He is incredibly positive. I doubt that he is properly appreciated or adequately compensated. But that doesn’t matter to him. He does a great job because he has set a high standard for himself. And that standard isn’t based on the demands of upper management. It is based on the demands of God.

Admittedly, having God as your employer has its burdens. God expects us to do our very best at all times. God expects us to be kind, even when we encounter rudeness. He expects us to go the extra mile, even when those around us operate in mediocrity. God expects us to do our best, even when we aren’t paid what we are worth, or we aren’t appreciated by our company.

God’s demands may seem to be asking too much. However, in God’s economy, if you live in faith and do your best, He will give you opportunities that no earthly employer will provide to you. He will use your life to serve the world in ways that you could never anticipate. You simply have to trust Him and cheerfully serve.

This week, when thinking about your job, remember that your human employer is not your true employer. Your true employer is God. Make sure that all that you do is pleasing to Him. Be kind, work hard, be helpful and do all of that for God.
