The seed of Netflix was planted when founder and CEO Reed Hastings received a late fee for renting Apollo 13 in 1997. He realized there was a big market, and successfully rivaled Blockbuster and changed on-demand Internet. With 23 million subscribers, cable subscriptions declined from 38 percent to 32 percent, according to Digital Trends.

Netflix has taken the lead on offering original programming like Kevin Spacey’s political drama "House of Cards," "Lilyhammer,", and "Orange is the New Black." The company shows no signs of slowing down as more original programming is currently being added.DreamWorks Animation and Netflix will be releasing “King Julien,” “Puss in Boots” and “Veggie Tales in the House” this year.

"Well, we're about 24 million subscribers today, and that's up from about 15 million a year ago, so it's a very high rate of growth, and that's what's exciting about the business - more and more people are getting smart TVs, they're watching Netflix on their iPads," Hastings told the press.

Here’s is why many love Netflix besides watching Kevin Spacey!

It makes financial sense. Where else can you watch unlimited shows under eight dollars? It’s great to keep the kids and husband busy, and it’s great to play in the background while cleaning.

We have little control in life, so Netflix‘s online demand allows you to binge watch and pick and choose the lineup. I made fun of  friends who chatted about binging on episodes. I will never go back to traditional programming again and I must confess, that binge watch once a week!

No commercials. Commercials make you want to drown out boredom by raiding the refrigerator. This also limits the junk you have to watch on network television that drive us alll mad.

Netlix is great for cold and rainy days. Cuddle up with the dog, cat, or your hubby for a marathon night of movies or old television shows.

Netflix is great for seniors. They have an extensive library with classics, and new shows and movies. You can also search for a movie by the actor’s name, and it's easy to read the selections.
