It’s not always easy to tell who is Christian or not Christian in Hollywood these days. While some profess to be Christian, you may not know by their actions. Contrary to popular belief, many celebrities today actually do believe in and love God. Some of these celebrities have been vocal about their faith. Others may not frequently talk about their faith in interviews but have a close personal relationship with God, which is reflected in their private lives. Once they found Him, the focus in their personal lives began to shift, and their faith grew stronger as a result of it. Some of these celebrities may take you by surprise, but it’s incredible to see that despite Hollywood’s reputation, there are celebrities who are unashamed of their faith in God. Here are some celebrities you may not know are Christian.
Ryan Gosling
It may come as a surprise that the larger-than-life actor is a believer in Christ, but he is! Gosling grew up with parents who had strong Mormon beliefs, and he says that religion has influenced every aspect of his life. Gosling said, “My mother admits it: She says you were raised by a religious zealot. She’s different now, but at the time, it was part of everything – What they ate, how they taught.” His family also moved around a lot because of their Mormon faith. Gosling still considers himself a Christian but now says he is a “non-denominational” Christian.
Nick Jonas
It might come as a shock to some that the “Jealous” singer has a personal relationship with God. In fact, when he first started his career in his family band, “The Jonas Brothers,” he was very vocal about his beliefs. He even wore a purity ring, publicly announcing his vow to abstain from sex until marriage. His relationship with God is still very important to him. Jonas said, “I’ve had an incredibly intense journey with faith and religion and my growth. My belief in God is still very strong and important to me as a person, and I think that’s all that should matter. The other things around it are not as important to me as my relationship with God.”
Keith Urban
Country star Keith Urban is just one of the many country musicians who have strong faith in God. Urban has never been shy about his faith in God. Many of his songs have religious meanings behind them, and some of them even have Bible verses in their titles. He and his wife, Nicole Kidman, even named their daughters Sunday and Faith. His commitment to family and traditional values are the most vivid reflections of his strong faith in God.
Kathie Lee Gifford
It may come to you as a surprise that the former popular talk show host was actually born Jewish, and when she was 12 years old, she became a “born again” Christian. Gifford then attended Oral Roberts University and says that Billy Graham is to thank for it. “My entire family came to faith through eternity through Billy Graham.” Her faith in God helped her get through her first year without her husband, NFL legend and broadcaster Frank Gifford, who died of natural causes in 2015. The year she lost her husband, she said, “I’ve gotten through the past year the way I’ve gotten through every day of my life, faithfully trusting God to do what God does, which is to show up, redeem and restore.” Her faith continues to be a central part of her life.
Serena Williams
The former world-renowned tennis player was raised Jehovah’s Witness and is still a proud Christian. Her faith is like a secret weapon, a stealthy supply of strength and perseverance that some observers say is as vital to her game as her 120 mph serve. After winning Wimbledon in 2012, she thanked God publicly. “I want to thank Jehovah for letting me get this far,” Williams said. “I almost didn’t make it a few years ago, but now I’m here again, and it’s so worth it.” In addition, Williams has left a trail of comments that show her belief in God, and her identity as a Witness has bolstered her already formidable tennis talents.
Garth Brooks
Country singer Garth Brooks is a devout Christian and has always glorified God anytime he has been acknowledged for an award or achievement. He also credits God for any musical talent he might have. Every record comes with a dedication to God, Jesus or both. One example: “…and most of all [I’d like to thank] Jesus Christ for without Him, nothing is possible, God bless us all.” Not only that, but Brooks is always writing Christian lyrics for his songs: “Above all to God, music is a tremendous power, please give us the wisdom and the courage to do all we can in the time we have.”
These celebrities found God in some pretty remarkable ways. Some of them found God at a very early age, and others became born-again Christians later in life. Whether they committed their lives to Christ early or later in life, their faith has played a major influence in their lives, and we can admire them for it.
