When the dwarves' greed threatens war, Bilbo gives away a particularly precious stone in an attempt to bring elves, men, and dwarves together. In the end, Bilbo's redemptive actions cause the dwarven leader to admit that "if more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world."
