“Confidence is more important than experience,” says Bora Milutinovic, who coached the U.S. national soccer team all the way to the World Cup and earned the nickname “The Miracle Worker” after coaching eight different countries’ national teams, taking five to the world championships: Mexico in 1986, Costa Rica in 1990, the United States in 1994, Nigeria in 1998, and China in 2002. “Far more important than skills, tactics or strategy is finding what it takes to motivate each player to play his or her absolute best. Then you win championships.”
