The 2024-2025 NFL season is officially underway, and fans are ready to cheer for their favorite teams as the top athletes compete for a Super Bowl spot. However, it’s about more than the Super Bowl for some players. It’s about finding their identity in God and glorifying Him. Here are some Christian football players to cheer for this season.
Russell Wilson
Russell Wilson played his first 10 seasons as the quarterback for the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL. Now, he’s playing his third season for the Denver Broncos. He previously won Super Bowl XLVIII and is a 9-time Pro Bowl player. Last year, Wilson and his wife Ciara led a worship service for a prison ministry called God Behind Bars. Wilson took to Instagram to discuss the event, saying over 300 inmates worshipped Jesus. He also quoted John 3:17, which says God sent Jesus to earth to save the world through Him. Wilson has never been shy about sharing his faith, frequently sharing scriptures on social media and reminding his followers that Jesus loves them.
Derek Carr
Derek Carr is a quarterback the Las Vegas Raiders drafted in the second round of the 2014 NFL Draft. However, the four-time Pro Bowler is in his second season with the New Orleans Saints this year. In a press conference after his trade to the Saints, Carr said he wouldn’t throw Bibles at people, but he has faith and believes. He emphasized that that’s how he raises his children and the foundation of his marriage. Carr grew up in a Christian family. As a child, he would miss playing football on Sundays because he and his family attended church. He also credited his parents for teaching him how to make faith a priority.
Harrison Butker
Harrison Butker, the kicker for the Kansas City Chiefs, is known for his robust Christian faith. Like other professional athletes, he’s been open about his beliefs, discussing his faith’s role in his career and life. Butker has said he wants to be a saint, and that’s why he believes he’s on earth. He added that he’s not only making kicks to make money and promote himself as a great person that people should emulate. He makes kicks because God gave him the platform to share the message of faith, virtue, growing closer to the sacraments, and being a saint.
In May, Butker delivered a highly controversial commencement speech at Benedictine College, where he touched on touched on gender roles, birth control and life after graduation, sparking widespread debate. His remarks criticized what he perceived as the erosion of free speech on campuses, calling out the suppression of conservative viewpoints. Buker’s blunt rhetoric and uncompromising stance drew both fierce support from his followers and strong backlash from critics, making headlines across the country.
Jalen Hurts
Last season, Jalen Hurts, quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles, led his team to the Super Bowl but fell short in the game’s last minutes. He shared a picture of him praying and kneeling on the field, writing, “He who kneels before God can stand before any man #BREEDOF1.” During a press conference at Super Bowl LVII, Hurts shared how he embraces all the fame and fortune regarding playing in the Super Bowl. He says he embraces it all by staying true to himself and being who God called him to be. He also shared that his favorite verse is John 13:7, which he says reminds him to be patient, steadfast and diligent by keeping his eyes on God. Hurts says he keeps God at the center regardless of the circumstances.
Trevor Lawrence
Trevor Lawrence is the quarterback for the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars selected Lawrence first overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, leading Lawrence to a breakout season in 2022, where he led the team to their first division title since 2017. Lawrence has always been open about his faith, wearing Romans 8:28 on his wristband. While visiting the “Faith on the Field” podcast, the quarterback shared how his relationship with God helps put everything in perspective, describing his faith as his “foundation.” Lawrence hopes to use his faith to be a light to other people.
Kirk Cousins
Kirk Cousins is the quarterback for the Minnesota Vikings. In 2012, he was drafted in the fourth round by the Washington Redskins as a backup to Robert Griffin III. He would eventually replace Griffin III after he was injured in 2015. In 2018, Cousins signed with the Vikings as a free agent and has remained a successful part of the team. The star QB has spoken on his faith often throughout his career. While at Michigan State, he spoke with "Beyond the Ultimate" about how his faith shaped him. Cousins is featured in the Netflix series "Quarterback," where you also see how faith impacts his family life. In one episode, you hear Cousins singing hymns with his son before bed.
Patrick Mahomes
Patrick Mahomes, quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs, will go down as one of the best QBs in the league. Since becoming the quarterback in 2018, Mahomes has led the team to four Super Bowls, winning three of them and has led the Chiefs to six consecutive AFC Championship game appearances. Outside of football, Mahomes has been open about how his faith impacts his life. After being the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship, Mahomes thanked God for healing his injury, adding that his faith plays a role in everything he does. He also openly shares his faith on social media.
