ROME (AP) - Pope John Paul II is updating a Roman Catholic Church tradition dear to millions of faithful, adding to the Rosary as part of his efforts to boost spirituality and devotion to Mary.

The changes to the Rosary, a series of prayers recited with the help of sets of beads held by the faithful, are expected to be announced by the pontiff on Wednesday, the 24th anniversary of his election to the papacy. According to Vatican sources, the pope will issue a document proposing that Catholics meditate on five more events in Christ's life in the new rosary, adding a further layer of spirituality to the age-old prayer.

Two weeks ago, the pontiff announced he was preparing a document to stress the value of the Rosary. He urged the faithful to recite the Rosary, including together as families.

John Paul said then that he wanted people to ``rediscover the beauty and depth of this prayer.''

The pope, who has dedicated his papal motto to the Virgin Mary, is especially devoted to the Rosary.

Italian news reports said the updated Rosary would be recited on special occasions in the Church's liturgical year.
