5 Ways God Speaks to Us in the 21st Century

God first conversed with the world by speaking to Adam in the Garden of Eden. He told Noah to build an ark and spoke to Moses in a burning bush. Paul heard God when he was on the way to Damascus and God promised Abraham a son. This all seems to long ago and so impossible for any of us now.

However, that cannot be further from the truth! God does still speak to us, despite us living in the modern century. Often people ask why they can’t hear God, but a big reason why people might not be able to hear Him is because they are distracted by the business of today’s society. The sins and temptations of today are hard to overcome and Satan frequently whispers in our ears.

Here are ways that you can still hear God today. He is speaking to you if you pause to listen!

Have you ever been listening to a church service, and felt that what the teacher was saying was a direct message for God to you? Have you been chatting with a friend and they give you a piece of advice seemingly out of nowhere that really resonated with you personally? While there was no way for them to have known your struggles, God always knows. God will use His children by speaking through them. Their words may come as a warning, a blessing, or as a prophetic truth about our lives. Whether we choose to hear it or ignore it depends on us. We have to choose to listen for God, especially in a world that constantly tells us not to. God knows that this world is bringing many of us down, so He chooses to use people in our lives that we trust to speak through.

Through Nature and His Creation

The world is so majestic. Through the intricate details and magnificent beauty of all that God has made, we can see God. Romans 1:20 states “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities–his eternal power and divine nature–have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.” God designed the world and spoke it into existence. When we spend time observing God’s creations, we connect with Him by building gratitude and appreciation. The world today is full of high-rise buildings, shopping malls, and cars. Take time to pause and look at nature through God’s eyes. You might be able to hear His voice.

Coincidences and Circumstance

God can speak to us through events by arranging our circumstances or coincidences. God allows events to occur in our lives to direct us, change us, and help us to grow spiritually (James 1:2–5;Hebrews 12:5–11). We don’t always know how to interpret the things that happen to us, but taking some time to pray and meditate with God will give us some insight. He has a perfect plan for us and will reach out to us through these events on our journey. God sets us up for success, but we have to pay attention to the opportunities He gives us. We have to step away from the business of today’s society and listen to Him. We can beat the enemy that is using the world to confuse us.
