5 Lies About Sex Christians Believe

For centuries, the Christian culture surrounding sex has been something kept very hush-hush. No one feels comfortable speaking about sex in a Christian context, which leads many people to be very confused about what the Bible actually says about it. Christians are making choices for themselves based on misconceptions and out of confusion instead of asking trusted Christian leaders or friends.

Not being educated about what healthy sexuality looks like hurts Christians more than helps them. God wants us to know about sex and the intricate design He has for it. He wants us to explore our desires in a healthy and safe way. When we choose to ignore that fact, Christians everywhere become confused on what is actually the truth. The current culture raises us to develop a very negative identity when it comes to sexuality.

Christians need to get over their discomfort and talk about sex. If we don’t, then these lies will continue to spread. Here are some of the lies you may believe, and why they really aren’t true.

Misconception 1: "God is embarrassed about sex."

There are many Christians that believe sex is not beautiful and God actually thinks it’s a gross act. However, God invented sex and He doesn’t regret that choice. The Bible never says that married couples should avoid sex unless they are procreating, and God didn’t shutter in disgust when Adam and Eve came together in the garden. God designed sex to be a striking moment of intimacy between two people that love each other. Through that intimacy, the couple finds they can bond with someone in a stronger way then they ever have before. God wants us to bring children into the world in a way that shows dedication, love, and connection.

Misconception 2: "Real Christians aren’t tempted by sex."

Satan is behind every corner, always trying to tempt you to do things that are against God’s Will. Curiosity is normal and it’s not shameful or even sinful to want to know more about sex. How you choose to act on these temptations and curiosities is much more important. Instead of using a search engine to answer your questions, find someone with a good marriage that can help teach you about sex within the context of God’s design for it. While God views sex as beautiful, He did put boundaries on it to protect us. We have to respect these boundaries when our curiosity arises. When we choose not to, that’s where we can get into trouble with sin.

Misconception 3: "Sexual purity only applies to single Christians."

Sexual purity means so much more than just abstaining from sex as a single Christian. God gives us a sex drive before we are married, so that we can understand how to control it and explore it under His guidance. This drive does not suddenly disappear when you are in a marriage. Even married people have to be focused on sexual purity and understand to control their desires. Marriage takes work and there will be times where a partner in the relationship might want more intimacy than the other partner. That doesn’t mean that they can go out and have an extra-marital affair, flirt with other people at the office, or watch pornographic material. They still have to remain sexually pure.

Misconception 4: "Having sex before marriage means you’re damaged goods."

When someone lies, they are not deemed a liar for the rest of their lives with no way to receive forgiveness. The same is for sex. If you feel you’ve made a sexual sin, that does not mean that you are going to remain sexually impure for the rest of your life, or that you won’t even find a good relationship, or that you are considered damaged. Colossians 1:21-22 says “And although you were formally alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach.” No matter what your past has been like, if you come to God with an open heart and a genuine desire to repent you can always become pure again. He can make your holiness pure.

Misconception 5: "Being inexperienced is unattractive."

What really is attractive is your ability to remain who you want to be, no matter what society tells you. There are so many people that have fallen victim to this trap because they think no one will want to marry them if they are sexually pure Christians. However that level of self-control, your ability to be patient, and dedication to being respectful of yourself and others are incredibly attractive qualities to have. God designed us to find these features attractive in our mate. While it may seem incredibly hard right now, there will be someone out there God had created just for you that will find your sexual purity to be a beautiful and positive thing.
