Christ Church Cathedral

The church was founded in 1839, making it Houston’s first religious congregation! From its beginnings, the church has served people of all religions and races in order to develop a sense of community to the small town of Houston. In the first years, the church conducted funerals for Roman Catholics, weddings for Jews, and taught the word of Christ to the children of the town slaves. Now, the church still welcomes all people to come and celebrate in their church. The Christ Church Cathedral has grown immensely since its 1839 days, yet still utilizes the historical building that was constructed over 170 years ago. The building itself has a breathtaking cathedral that also serves as the symbolic center of diocese for the city.

St. Paul’s United Methodist Church

This church tops the list because of its stunning architecture and rich history. St. Paul’s United Methodist Church was designed by the same architect who did the San Jacinto Monument, and work began on the church only a few months before the 1929 market crash. Luckily, even through the great depression, the church continued to slowly grow and the congregation was finally able to pay off the church’s debt in 1951. Now, the church is booming and has since added a nursery, school, and youth sanctuary. They have even been able to grow internationally by serving missions in Bolivia and Russia. St. Paul’s United Methodist church is not only a piece of art, but a reminder that the people of God can stick together and rise up through anything (even a great depression!).

Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart

The Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart is a beautiful cathedral that works together with St. Mary’s Cathedral Basilica in Galveston, Texas to served more than 1.2 million Roman Catholics. Because of the large growth of Galveston and Houston in 1959, Reverend Wendelin J. Nold, fifth bishop of Galveston Diocese, was permitted by Rome to erect the Co-Cathedral of the Sacred Heart. While this original cathedral was beautiful, Houston long outgrew its small stature and a new cathedral was to be created. Since construction of the new cathedral was completed in April of 2008, the general contractor of the project has been awarded numerous accolades for their amazing work. This is a must see church in the area.

Antioch Missionary Baptist Church

Antioch Missionary Baptist Church is a historic Baptist church in Downtown Houston, and was historically a part of the Fourth Ward. The church was built in 1875 and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1976. This church is the oldest African American Baptist church in the city, giving it a rich history. Even today, the members still worship in the sanctuary’s original handmade pews. Rev. Jack Yates, a former slave, served as the first pastor of Antioch Baptist. Many speak of how the church still thrives because of Rev. Yates previous teachings. Nestled between two giant skyscrapers, the church produces a stark contrast to the city.
