Rather than finding God in the wiring of the brain, Dr. Rick Strassman has proposed that a neurochemical, DMT, produced in the brain’s pineal gland, is responsible for our mystical experiences. DMT is also present in ayahuasca, a tea used by certain South American tribes to take its members on spirit journeys. When Strassman gave DMT to subjects in his lab, many reported feelings of bliss, connectedness, and the sense of a divine loving presence. Others, however, experienced demons and aliens, leading him to cut his research short, but only after speculating that what he termed “the Spirit Molecule” may be responsible for both the positive mystical experiences reported by prophets and the demon possessions or alien abductions claimed by others.
