The Shadow Face. Behind closed doors, her dark presence lunges from her hiding place. She’s prideful. Haughty. Controlling. Burdened with guilt over things she should have controlled. Worried. Resentful. Angry. Not trusting anyone but herself. She can anticipate a potential problem, and figure out how to fix it before it happens. If it happens. She’s overwhelmed and overburdened. Embattled and embittered. Exhausted. Sound familiar? Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. ~ Proverbs 16:18 (NKJV)

Hiding Behind the Cape In The Screwtape Letters C.S. Lewis says, “There are two kinds of people: those who say to God, ‘Thy will be done,’ and those to whom God says, ‘All right, then, have it your way.’” So we live our SuperGal life, (it’s terrific, right? Right?), and do our best to keep our Shadow Face shoved to the back of that junk-filled closet. Where she thumps. And scratches. And manages to stick her fingers out from under the door where we’re sure to trip over them. Never giving us a moment’s peace. She’s covered with the dust of resentment. The cobwebs of our exhaustion. She holds the key to those old, moldy trunks, deeply hidden in that closet. Emotional trunks holding stuff we don’t want to see. But we manage to control her. Keep her hidden. We’re SuperGal, after all.

Finding the Door Then, in despair, in the silence of our power outage, we hear it. Knock! Knock! Then a voice. “Hello? Can you hear me? Will you let Me in?” Yes, Jesus is standing at our door, holding all the SuperPower we need right this minute! But He’s waiting for us to open it. He won’t kick that door down. That’s just the way He rolls. Maybe we never heard His knock over the chaos that is our lives. Over all the problems we needed to fix. Over the rattling of the shackles we forged all by ourselves. Sure. We already agreed we are Christians. Yep. But Jesus isn’t just our Holy Help Desk, waiting for us to call for 24/7 live technical support when our lives have blue-screened. Jesus wants us to seek His power. Willingly and eagerly, every single day. Hour. Minute. With us. For us. Full time. Guiding us through the big stuff. And the wee, bitty stuff. Supplying us with the Power we couldn’t dream of supplying on our own. No matter how hard we work."
