Religion and Politics
In his 1796 Farewell Address, Washington wrote that “religion and morality are indispensible supports” for a nation. He asked “Where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths, which are the instruments of investigation in Courts of Justice?” Clearly, Washington understood the moral necessity of religion in a nation aspiring to greatness.
