Presence of God
God is, of course, genderless, but the biblical writers depicted God as both father and mother in traditional roles. As father, God protects and provides for us. As mother, God treats us tenderly and nurtures us.
The idea of “God our Father” began with Judaism, but Judaism has also always provided God with a womb, and has depicted God as one who “suckles”.
The Jewish mystical tradition, the Shechina is translated as the “presence” of God in the Bible, becomes the feminine aspect of God. All symbolic, yes, but symbols we cherish.
