What a trip to Wal-Mart taught me about convicts and God

Shuffling toward her destiny

I wanted to quit too. The women stared at me, waiting for me to tell them something. I knew I couldn’t admit defeat just yet. I scanned my brain, searching for a plan. Then I remembered that they had arrived with almost no possessions. “Let’s go shopping. I’m giving you each one hundred dollars. Ya’ll need panties and toiletries,” I said. I maneuvered the van into a parking spot in front of Wal-Mart. As we entered the store, I decided the best way to handle the women would be to get out of their way. I pointed to the panty aisle and grabbed a cart. “I’m shopping for toys for my boy. I’ll meet you back here in a half hour.”
