Angels are Ushers for Our Souls

Angels are spirits created by God (Colossians 1:16, Hebrews 1:14).

They are the invisible created things that have a hierarchy - so while we cannot see them we ought to nonetheless be confident of their existence. These invisible created things are spirits meant to serve those who are to inherit salvation - fallen man who now freely chooses Christ. This establishes our relationship with angels in that they are to help us in ways that we may not fully know or understand. However, they aren’t meant to be our servants in an indentured sort of way. We shouldn’t be trying to discover how to boss them around or manipulate them. They are meant to help usher our souls into an eternity with God.

Through the Eyes of Christ

It is understood and agreed upon by all Christians that angels do not reproduce and yet are countless in number (Hebrews 12:22). Having never sinned or fallen out of grace, angels have what many feel is a confusing relationship to man in that man is made a bit lower than angels and yet will attain a higher status at the fullness of God’s kingdom. A “fallen mind” has a difficult time grasping such a concept - and yet it is the Scriptural Truth (Luke 20:26). However, when we live in other Truths, such as loving others as we love ourselves or seeing others through the eyes of Christ, we are better able to see how angels who have always experienced the beatific vision would welcome us into the kingdom in whatever capacity God desires. The scales of jealousy or envy do not cover an angel’s vision.

God's Helpers

Great comfort is found in Psalm 91, especially in verse 11 wherein we find that God “commands the angels to guard you in all your ways.” Yet this comfort should not translate into assuming we have a “get out of jail free card” wherein we foolishly live our lives on the edge. Rather it is to remind us of the great call we have upon our lives as sons and daughters of the king. Indeed, Isaiah 26:3 seems to indicate that God’s angels are needed as much for the spiritual warfare that is taking place around us as they are needed in our earthly circumstances. Certainly one feeds and leads to the other: our time on earth is meant to lead to our eternity in heaven and angels are our helpers along the way.
